JEDEC Nears Completion of UFS 5.0 Standard for Next-Generation Mobile and Computing Devices

The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association is finalizing the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 standard, marking a significant leap forward in high-performance, low-power storage solutions for mobile and computing applications. UFS 5.0 is engineered to deliver exceptional data transfer speeds—up to 10.8 GB/s for sequential read and write operations—while maintaining backward compatibility with existing UFS 4.x hardware.

Key Innovations in UFS 5.0

UFS 5.0 leverages advanced specifications from the MIPI Alliance to optimize its Interconnect Layer, ensuring both high performance and energy efficiency. The new standard incorporates the forthcoming MIPI M-PHY version 6.0 and UniPro version 3.0 specifications. M-PHY 6.0 introduces High-Speed Gear 6 (HS-G6), which doubles the maximum data rate of the previous generation (HS-G5). This enhancement enables UFS 5.0 to achieve interface bandwidths of up to 46.6 Gb/s per lane, supporting effective read and write speeds of approximately 10.8 GB/s across two M-PHY lanes.

UFS: Power-Efficient Storage for Modern Devices

The Universal Flash Storage standard has become the preferred choice for embedded storage in devices where power efficiency and high performance are critical. Since the release of JESD220G UFS 4.1 in December 2024, UFS has continued to evolve, supporting a wide range of applications including smartphones, wearables, edge computing devices, gaming consoles, and automotive systems. Its fast serial interface and streamlined protocol enable rapid data transfers, contributing to robust system performance without excessive power consumption.

Notable Features of UFS 5.0

  • Sequential data transfer speeds up to 10.8 GB/s, meeting the demands of AI and data-intensive applications
  • Integrated link equalization for enhanced signal integrity and reliability
  • Dedicated power supply rail to isolate noise between the PHY and memory subsystem, simplifying system integration
  • Inline Hashing for improved data security

With these advancements, UFS 5.0 is set to provide a robust foundation for the next generation of mobile and computing devices, supporting the growing need for faster, more secure, and energy-efficient storage solutions.
